Service of Thanksgiving at Selby Abbey
On Sunday, 16 September, 2007, a special Service of Thanksgiving took place at Selby Abbey in Selby, North Yorkshire.
This was a special service to say thank you to the volunteers and supporters who have helped Hearing Dogs in so many ways over the last 25 years.
Our own Alison Chester spoke about her life with her hearing dog, Dodger, and Dr. Paul Whittaker from Music and the Deaf signed a recording of the song We Can Be Kind. There was a poem entitled Memories of Lassie read by Derrick McRobert and a reading from the Bible chosen by Alison Chester.
The retiring collection was divided between Hearing Dogs and Selby Abbey. Refreshments were served after the service.
Thanks must go to Kate Holdsworth and Nicky Litchfield for organising this very special occasion.
'Buy a Brick' Appeal
Hearing Dogs have launched an appeal to raise £1m for a new Northern Training Centre, near Bielby in East Yorkshire.
The target for this appeal is a massive £2.5m. However, £1.5m of this has already been raised, but the charity still needs to find the final £1m to build the kennels, training houses, accommodation and offices.
You can help raise the funds for this much needed new facility by buying a brick of support. Everyone that donates to this appeal will have their name placed in a book of recognition and thanks, which will be displayed in the new centre when it becomes operational in summer 2008.
For more information and a link to download the donation form, please visit the special 'Buy a Brick' Appeal page.
Formby Show 2007
Alison Chester and her hearing dog Dodger, Tony Wright, and Vera & Tom Norris all attended the Formby Show with a stall at the Guild Hall on Saturday, 28 July.
It was a sunny afternoon with various attractions going on at the Guild Hall. There was a Scarecrow Competition, flower arrangement display, demonstration of gymnastics from girls at the YMCA, and music from the Lancashire Band.
The Dog Game run by Vera proved popular and we had several winners we are pleased to say!
Bishop David Sheppard School Summer Fete 2007
On Saturday, 7 July Alison Chester, Audrey Gibson, Edna Royds, Tony Wright and Roy
Hartley attended the Bishop David Sheppard School
Summer Fete.
The weather was much kinder than the previous Saturday at the Southport Carnival. Audrey and Edna looked after the stall in the school hall while Tony and Roy manned the Dog Game outside in the tent. Alison and her hearing dog, Dodger, walked between the two attractions and talked to people about Hearing Dogs.
Special thanks go to Brent Bartley for setting up the tent.
Southport Charity Carnival 2007
Members of the Southport & District Branch took part in the Southport Charity Carnival on Saturday, 30 June.
Despite the horrendous weather of heavy rain, we had a float in the procession along Lord Street and a stall at Victoria Park throughout the day.
Many of the members were on the float, which was decorated to show how much different aspects of Hearing Dogs cost. Brent Bartley looked quite the part as a vet.
Judith Abram walked alongside the lorry dressed up as Scooby-Doo, and we also had a mini version of that character walking along the street as well!
